Sambar – recipe 1 (normal paruppu sambar)
I cooked sambar twice over the weekend, mom was unwell so was forced to cook. Anyway here is the recipe for the same.
Disclaimer: It took me almost 90 minutes to cook this stuff, not sure whether it was amazing. It sufficed and my hunger was under control after eating the same, here it goes.
Step 1: Take 1 small cup of dal (paruppu in tamil), rinse it thoroughly. Here is the trick, make sure you rinse it very quickly, dont keep it soaked for a very long time. (The more you keep it soaked for a long time the longer the time to cook). Hence rinse it thoroughly to clean it as shown below.

Step 2: Take 1 normal sized tomato and onion. Cut the tomato into four large pieces as shown. It will be cooked in the pressure and later on mashed manually, so u need not cut it into small pieces. Cut onion into fine pieces and add it to the cooker.

Add a pinch of turmeric powder and the cook it for 3 whistles. Allow it to cook it in low flame for the 4th whistle, and switch off the cooker during the 5th whistle. (All these numbers can vary based on the dal used, practice makes u perfect so just go ahead with what you feel during the first shot).

This is how the contents will resemble after switching off the cooker.

Step 3: Remove excess water and mash the dal manually (used a mathu at home). Mash it hard so that you get a very thin gravy, add the water content back. Sambar is done as in the below pic.

Now for thalichifying the stuff (oggarane).
One teaspoon of oil and mustard together with red chillies and karuvepillai will do the trick.

Its been 12 years now an integral part of myself infact.
I am referring to my watch which is 12 years old now, its been around my wrist ever since 7th grade. This has been my first watch and hopefully will be there with me forever. I remember having almost lost it once, spent a whole day heart broken. I got it back the next day, luckily no one stole it from where i had left it. My parents suggested me to purchase a new watch when i joined work, they told me that the old one did not have that manly look or executive look…. I refused the proposal straight away saying what ever happens this watch will stay with me forever. I had to flatly refuse my close friends plans of gifting me a watch. Wonder really why i am so attached to this one, probably because its never let me down. Something which tics and tics and tics and never gets tired of it…. my watch, my precious in gollum’s words, here is the pic.

What an enervating experience?
40 of us assembled on wipro campus (thats where i work), to undergo training for the upcoming marathon (Spirit of wipro is what its called). Mr.Arjun devaiah organizes the training, simply a great trainer. The day started off at 5:45 picked up my friend and left for sarjapur campus. We just started off with a almost 3 km run, this is the first time i’ve run so long on road. It always used to be the treadmill. The run was very tiring no doubt but thanks to my regular runs on treadmill i was able to manage. The drilling exercise post the run was even better, it literally alleviated the pain from the entire body. Came back and hit the sack, up after 3 hrs to write this post. probably will get used to it from tomorrow onwards.
