Making your linux run faster
Linux works on the simple logic that anything and everything is a process. There will be a lot of unnecessary processes running in the background which would consume your cpu’s usage. You can execute “ps -eaf | wc -l” to count the number of processes running on your system currently. There will be a lot of processes such as bluetooth, cups(pritintin system process), klogd (one which logs messages). All of them are not going to be needed by us at all times, however they get started the moment system boots up.
Now for the big question, How to disable them???????
There will be a lot of methods suggested, but the most simple and the classic way of doing it is this.
All these processes which are going to be started are in the directory /etc/init.d/ directory. In the directories /etc/rcX.d/ we will have the soft links which are the reasons for these processes to be started. All you have to do is go into directory /etc/init.d and remove the execution permission to the processes. Say for the file cups execute “chmod -x /etc/init.d/cups”.
Reboot your system and you will find that this process wouldnt have started on boot up. Removing a lot of redundant processes similarly makes ur system super fast. Atleast mine went fast, any more such techniques please do share. I love systems which are rocket paced.
Other softwares which help you find out processes running are system monitor and “BUM = boot up manager”……. Wonder why they never found a better name.

Restarting X in ubuntu
Any time X server crashes (X provides an interface between your hardware and the graphical software you want to run. Besides that, Xorg is also fully network-aware, meaning you are able to run an application on one system while viewing it on a different one.) the following commands help you to restart X.
In Linux the PC monitor is usually called the console and has several device special files associated with it: tty0, tty1, tty2, etc. When you log in you are on tty1. To go to tty2 (on the same screen) press down the 2 keys Alt(left)-F2. For tty3 use Left Alt-F3, etc. These (tty1, tty2, tty3, etc.) are called “virtual terminals”. tty0 is just an alias for the current virtual terminal and it’s where messages from the system are sent. Thus messages from the system will be seen on the console (monitor) regardless of which virtual terminal it is displaying.
You may log in to different virtual terminals and thus have a few different sessions with the computer going on at the same time. Only the system or the root user may write to /dev/tty0 to which /dev/console is sometimes linked.
Now say your linux has started X on tty7 and for some reason it crashed, an amatuer will generally restart the stupid computer unaware that he is the stupid one (I once was an amatuer). Okay what do we do when our X crashes and you see nothing but a blank screen. Go to a different virtual terminal and restart x by typing
sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart
or gdm based on whether you are running kde or gnome. Guess what your X restarts beautifully and you do get a login screen again on your old virtual terminal.
ctrl+alt+backspace is another manner in which X can be restarted but however its not reckomended. Anyone reading this post having more knowledge please do comment on this.

Sambar – recipe 1 (normal paruppu sambar)
I cooked sambar twice over the weekend, mom was unwell so was forced to cook. Anyway here is the recipe for the same.
Disclaimer: It took me almost 90 minutes to cook this stuff, not sure whether it was amazing. It sufficed and my hunger was under control after eating the same, here it goes.
Step 1: Take 1 small cup of dal (paruppu in tamil), rinse it thoroughly. Here is the trick, make sure you rinse it very quickly, dont keep it soaked for a very long time. (The more you keep it soaked for a long time the longer the time to cook). Hence rinse it thoroughly to clean it as shown below.

Step 2: Take 1 normal sized tomato and onion. Cut the tomato into four large pieces as shown. It will be cooked in the pressure and later on mashed manually, so u need not cut it into small pieces. Cut onion into fine pieces and add it to the cooker.

Add a pinch of turmeric powder and the cook it for 3 whistles. Allow it to cook it in low flame for the 4th whistle, and switch off the cooker during the 5th whistle. (All these numbers can vary based on the dal used, practice makes u perfect so just go ahead with what you feel during the first shot).

This is how the contents will resemble after switching off the cooker.

Step 3: Remove excess water and mash the dal manually (used a mathu at home). Mash it hard so that you get a very thin gravy, add the water content back. Sambar is done as in the below pic.

Now for thalichifying the stuff (oggarane).
One teaspoon of oil and mustard together with red chillies and karuvepillai will do the trick.

Its been 12 years now an integral part of myself infact.
I am referring to my watch which is 12 years old now, its been around my wrist ever since 7th grade. This has been my first watch and hopefully will be there with me forever. I remember having almost lost it once, spent a whole day heart broken. I got it back the next day, luckily no one stole it from where i had left it. My parents suggested me to purchase a new watch when i joined work, they told me that the old one did not have that manly look or executive look…. I refused the proposal straight away saying what ever happens this watch will stay with me forever. I had to flatly refuse my close friends plans of gifting me a watch. Wonder really why i am so attached to this one, probably because its never let me down. Something which tics and tics and tics and never gets tired of it…. my watch, my precious in gollum’s words, here is the pic.

What an enervating experience?
40 of us assembled on wipro campus (thats where i work), to undergo training for the upcoming marathon (Spirit of wipro is what its called). Mr.Arjun devaiah organizes the training, simply a great trainer. The day started off at 5:45 picked up my friend and left for sarjapur campus. We just started off with a almost 3 km run, this is the first time i’ve run so long on road. It always used to be the treadmill. The run was very tiring no doubt but thanks to my regular runs on treadmill i was able to manage. The drilling exercise post the run was even better, it literally alleviated the pain from the entire body. Came back and hit the sack, up after 3 hrs to write this post. probably will get used to it from tomorrow onwards.

life time experience
This is exactly what i wanted to do atleast once in life, and it pops out of no where and in no time.
Day is sunday, ganesha chathurthi festival… Me an my friends made it Balaji theater in Viveknagar, decided on the fly.
We purchase the tickets and only then realise that there are no seat numbers printed on the ticket, which means only one thing…. Its catch me if you can scenario except that the seats are what need to be caught. I was surprised to the limit that such a theater still exists in bangalore. Guess what, we head to the entrance of the theater only to find a long queue aligned thanks to the metal railing..
. One of my friends jumps on the railing, makes it in to the hall. The rest of us squeeze through in the middle of the line, i have never ever entered a theater in this manner till date. There was just one lady in the entire queue, so u must be aware how wild and local the crowd should have been.
After a few minutes of struggle we made it to the theater, our pal who jumped first had reserved a row for us. The movie started and whistle rain was pouring even before vikram is on screen, the one feel u will never get in any damn mall. Movie was great with the crowd maintaining the whistle rain till the end, probably enjoyed the movie for that reason itself….. So any day u feel like having fun whilst watching a movie make it to Sri balaji, one hell of a place i am sure
Bala happy that he did some thing which he always dreamt of….. next up on list is the late night movie which is yet to be done, have a gut feeling it will come true soon.
Bhuvan is here.
A Geoportal of Indian Space Research Organisation showcasing Indian Imaging Capabilities in Multi-sensor, Multi-platform and Multi-temporal domain. The portal gives a gateway to explore and discover virtual earth in 3D space with specific emphasis on Indian region.
Succintly speaking its ISRO’s version of google earth. Although the resolution does not match upto the bench mark (Obvi set by google), its good for a kick off. I was able to look at M.G.Road and KSCA stadium, but not with great clarity. However what impressed me was the level of details they have included in the map. From rivers to wate reservoirs, from districts to taluk names, from National highways to Golden quad the detail levels are excellent. I am sure you will be able to track your town, maybe even become nostalgic looking at our state maps and stuff.
Now for the bad things about bhuvan, there is too much dependency on MS products. It works only on Internet explorer (they couldnt even copy mo****’s code correclty), needs dot net to be installed. Needs other MS products to be installed, so getting bhuvan up might be a little tedious. But its worth it. Happy Independence day.

Windows macro developer, Keyboard express rocks.
Well are you tired of doing the same repeated job on windows. In other words are you doing any cut copy paste job, taking screenshots and stuff.
Here is one software which will make your life easy. This guy is nothing but a macro developer which can be run on windows. I wanted to take snapshots of a certain reckords on a website. However it was super tedious. I wrote a macro which takes snapshot and switches between word and mozilla, also it supported web page movements too. What would have taken days, well probably i wouldnt have done it if it took days just got over in 2 hours. This is one application, you might find something else which might suite you for sure.
Hats off to the developer, its not free though but definitely worth the money. You made my weekend for that matter.
There is a 30 day free trail download, check it out

Nadodigal review.
A simple story, an everyday happening story in India told it in a different way. The theme of the story is appreciatable but not many would be in their seats by then in the theater. The director should have concentrated on the screen play a little more and yeah as usual avoided a few songs. Story starts of with three friends and their lives, what they do and stuff like that. A new friend, our hero karunanakaran’s pal comes into their lives and attempts suicide. The reason being love and blind love. All of them risk their lives and help the couple elope successfully. In the course one of them looses his hearing ability, one of them looses his leg and the hero is left with brutal injuries. All this happen when helping the couple elope. This is what happens till intermission, and i was absolutely frustrated with the way things were going on. First thing they were insulting love, secondly friendship and it was all bullshit. Love is not about running away, i will kill myself for you… Its not that crap. The director must watch “ye nee romba azhagairrukke”, a kick ass movie based on love. The theme of that movie was amazing, whether u love me or not i will always love you. Its not business to say you must love me inturn or will spill acid on ur face…
Anyway back to our movie which was totally making no sense to me and dialogues about friendship and love were tormenting enough. I and mom however decided to go ahead and watch the second half. The story continues not making much progress for the next half an hour, everyone just shouting more
and more. Our saviors of the day loose more in their lives because of this, hero infact looses his own love. It was high time i thought since it
was already 2 hrs of mental torture, that was when we have the theme coming up. The couple who eloped split and decided to get married again and
had applied divorce. Our saviors of the day enraged after hearing this go ahead and beat the living day lights out of the couple. This part of the story is what made me like the movie. The movie ends here and the saviors walk away after assaulting them physically. Overall a good movie but you need to undergo two hours of torture to really understand what the director is saying.
Commitment is something that must not be said, but must be felt. Its not about changing status on orkut or facebook, its not about going to the beach and sitting together, its something that never goes back. Don’t commit just for pleasures. A good message to the lovers on earth, to their parents. Thank god the director had this anti climax or else half the youth would have started eloping by now…
